Frequently Asked Questions

1: What is DVBStreamExplorer and what does it do?
Please check out our homepage for an explanation.
2: What are the differences between the Standard Edition and the Professional Edition?
Some of the more advanced features are available only in the Professional Edition. For a complete list of differences between the two editions, please visit our feature page.
3: Can DVBStreamExplorer analyze a transport stream in real-time?

Both DVBStreamExplorer editions provides a Transport Stream Monitor which provides real-time parsing of PAT, PMT, CAT, NIT, SDT, BAT, TOT, TDT and EIT PSI/SI tables, logging of PCR, PTS and DTS time stamps, logging of MPEG2 A/V, H.264 and AC3 elementary stream key parameters and of unknown PID usage, besides providing a summary of services on other MUXes. In addition, the Professional Edition provides additional parsing such as MHP Application Information Tables (AIT), IP/MAC Notification Tables (INT), and more.

The TS Monitor provided in the Professional Edition can also list all PIDs in order and display what kind of information it carries and which programme or programmes reference the PID.

4: What devices does DVBStreamExplorer support?

DVBStreamExplorer supports devices that provide drivers implementing the BDA interface (Microsoft DirectX technology for digital television). Most modern devices do support this, but check your device specifications to make sure. One exception to this rule are devices such as TechnoTrend TT-Premium and TT-Connect, which provide hardware based acceleration. This modifies the Transport Stream as presented to the software thus interfering with what DVBStreamExplorer is intended to do. Budget cards such as TechnoTrend TT-Budget are preferred, however it is always best to download the trial version of the software to make sure it can work with your device.

The only non-BDA supported device is TechniSat SkyStar 2. Due to the popularity of this device, we have invested time to specifically support its non-BDA interface.

One limitation of BDA is that it does not implement some features properly, such as DiSEqC and CI. DVBStreamExplorer provides some vendor-specific support for the following devices:

  • DVBWorld USB 2102 (DiSEqC 1.2)
  • TechnoTrend (DiSEqC 1.2 and CI)
  • TechnoTrend (DiSEqC 1.0 via InputRange)
  • DekTec devices (only supported in DVBStreamExplorer Professional Edition and, for testing purposes, in the Free Edition).
5: How can I check whether my hardware is compatible with DVBStreamExplorer?
You can download the Free Edition of DVBStreamExplorer from this link: http://www.dvbstreamexplorer.com/analyzer/free.aspx. If the Free Edition works with your hardware, so will the Standard and the Professional Editions. This includes support for DekTec devices.
6: What are the limitations of the trial version?
The only limitation is that the trial expires after 21 days, after which you will be required to purchase a license to continue using the product. Other than that, all features available in that particular edition (Standard or Professional) will be available.
7: How do I activate the full version?
When you download the product, you will be asked to activate the product using the demo license key, which will either be DVBSESTDDEMO or DVBSEPRODEMO, depending on your download. This will kick-start the trial period (you will need Internet access from the computer running DVBStreamExplorer for activation). When you purchase the product, you will receive a license key at the e-mail address you provide us with. To activate the full product and remove the 21 day trial limitation, click on Help->Activate product, and enter your license key in the space provided.
8: Do you sell hardware devices?

No. Our experience is in software development, so that is where we are investing our resources. If we were to recommend a device, we would suggest the budget family of cards from TechnoTrend. Please note however that we are not affiliates or resellers of this company, so we do the recommendation based on our experience and good intentions towards our customers. We purchased ours from here: http://www.dvbshop.net.

If you are an OEM provider and you would like to package DVBStreamExplorer with your device, feel free to contact us on info[at]dvbstreamexplorer[dotcom].

We are currently developing our reseller programme, so if you are a distributor or reseller and you are interested in distributing and/or selling our product, feel free to contact us on this address.
